My framework for decolonizing mental health
Professionally, I provide mental health services to folx of marginalized identities. I aim to decolonize mental health by providing safe, therapeutic spaces that give folx an outlet to honor their lived experiences as a way to promote healing.
The same is true for the space I create where I provide business consultation, supervision and community.
My commitment to creating safe, therapeutic spaces
All group offerings via Brave & Well invite folx of all different identities and backgrounds to participate. With those identities come lived experiences that may be rooted in oppression and resistance. While I know that not everyone has had the same journey, these spaces/groups are sacred and brave, and we do not tolerate any forms of hate, racism and discrimination.
Our time together will honor our lived experiences as it relates to our work as business owners and as healers. We will reflect on the practices you aim to build and grow while bearing in mind the inequities that exist in the mental health field. You will be invited to dive deep into how you can build a practice that is founded on accountability, frequent evaluation and equitable practices.
Brave & Well understands the difference between being anti-racist and "not racist,” and actively participates in the dismantling of white supremacy in the mental health field.
In these groups, we ask that everyone come with a desire to learn, be challenged, and show up imperfectly yet teachable in community. We will focus on impact versus intent. We will make mistakes and we will make amends. While we come together to learn and listen, we will hold each other accountable with humanity and courage.
The 4 Commitments of Clinicians Prepared to Decolonize Mental Health
I will practice courage over comfort and speak up even in moments of fear. I will mess up, make amends, and try again.
I will continue to learn more about my role in this larger effort, moving forward without pause.
I will honor all the parts of me that show up with grace and compassion, and I will do the work to dismantle white supremacy in mental health through advocacy, unlearning and uplifting the voices of Black BIPOC and non-black BIPOC.
I will build a practice that centers the needs of ALL people and especially those who have been oppressed.
